Centenary of Scouting

This patch came with the proof-like 50 Pence "Be Prepared" coin.
I believe the set was only issued at the World Scout Jamboree.

Northwest Territorial Mint

I recently found a new series of nicely minted
scout coins.  If you are interested in beginning
a collection, I recommend these.

There are Boy Scout, Cub Scout, Venturing,
Sea Scouts and Order of the Arrow coins.

Like many other companies, the Excelsior Shoe Company took advantage of the new Boy Scout program by advertising that they sold the "The Original 'Boy Scout' Shoe for Boys."  Included with shoes that were bought from Excelsior was a "Good-Luck Charm Free with each pair of Boy Scout shoes."

There are a number of major types of the token issued and many minor variations.  I have used the book called "The Boy Scout Tokens of The Excelsior Shoe Company" by Rudy Dioszegi to classify the major types.  However, I have used different numbering for the subtypes and have not included the minor variations such as:  length of words, type of quotes, etc.  The tokens are between 32 to 33 mm in diameter.

In addition to the major types listed by Rudy, I have included two additional types which I call type 11 & 12.

This helpful book is available by contacting Rudy, rdexonumia@msn.com.  His address is 3307 12th St. E., Burnsville, MN  55337-3441.  The cost of the book is $8 postpaid.

Type 1 has a scout on horseback on the obverse and the Excelsior Shoe Company seal on the reverse.  The legend on the tokens read as follows:

1.1

obverse

THE ORIGINAL "BOY SCOUT" SHOE FOR BOYS, JULY 1910

reverse

MANUFACTURED BY THE EXCELSIOR SHOE CO PORTSMOUTH, O.

1.2

obverse

THE ORIGINAL "BOY SCOUTS" SHOE FOR BOYS, JULY 1910

MANUFACTURED BY THE EXCELSIOR SHOE CO PORTSMOUTH, O.

1.3

obverse

THE ORIGINAL "WORLD SCOUTS" SHOE FOR BOYS, JULY 1910

reverse

MANUFACTURED BY THE EXCELSIOR SHOE CO PORTSMOUTH, O.

Type 2 has a scout on horseback on the obverse and the reverse has many good luck symbols including the Indian cross (Swastika).  The legend on the tokens read as follows:

2.1

obverse

THE ORIGINAL "BOY SCOUT" SHOE FOR BOYS, JULY 1910

reverse

GOOD LUCK (at the top of the token) &
MANUFACTURED BY THE EXCELSIOR SHOE CO PORTSMOUTH, O.

2.2

obverse

THE ORIGINAL "BOY SCOUTS" SHOE FOR BOYS, JULY 1910

reverse

GOOD LUCK (at the top of the token) &
MANUFACTURED BY THE EXCELSIOR SHOE CO PORTSMOUTH, O.

2.2Ag

obverse

THE ORIGINAL "BOY SCOUTS" SHOE FOR BOYS, JULY 1910

reverse

GOOD LUCK (at the top of the token) &
MANUFACTURED BY THE EXCELSIOR SHOE CO PORTSMOUTH, O.

Type 2.2Ag is a sterling version of the token.  The word STERLING is stamped into the lower reverse of the token.  It is my understanding that this version was given to a Scoutmaster when all the boys in his troop purchased Excelsior Boy Scout Shoes.  The diameter of the sterling version is 31.5 mm.

Type 3 has a scout on horseback on the obverse and the reverse has many good luck symbols including the Indian cross (Swastika).  The legend on the tokens read as follows:

3

obverse

"BOY SCOUTS" (at the top of the token) &
MANUFACTURED BY THE EXCELSIOR SHOE CO PORTSMOUTH, O. (no date)

reverse

MEMBERSHIP EMBLEM OF THE BOY SCOUTS CLUB &
GOOD LUCK (at the bottom of the token)

Type 4 has an Indian scout on horseback on the obverse and the reverse has many good luck symbols including the Indian cross (Swastika). The legend on the tokens read as follows:

4

obverse

"BOY SCOUTS" (at the top of the token) &
MANUFACTURED BY THE EXCELSIOR SHOE CO PORTSMOUTH, O. (no date)

reverse

MEMBERSHIP EMBLEM OF THE BOY SCOUTS CLUB &
GOOD LUCK (at the bottom of the token)

I feel that types 5 and 7 are variations of type 3 so I am not including them.

Type 6 has a scout on horseback on the obverse and the Excelsior Shoe Company seal on the reverse.  The legend on the tokens read as follows:

6

obverse

THE ORIGINAL "BOY SCOUTS" ARMY SHOE, MUNSON LAST

reverse

MANUFACTURED BY THE EXCELSIOR SHOE CO PORTSMOUTH, O.

I have not seen types 8, 9 & 10 as they are less common.  I may include them when I have examples.

Type 11 is a scout on horseback but a different style scout and horse than the others.  The reverse is the same as type 2.

11.1

Type 12 is a scout on a horseback like type 11.  The reverse is a large horse shoe.

THE EXCELSIOR    MEDAL    SHOE FOR BOYS, (no date)

GOOD LUCK (at the top of the token) &
BELLE MEADE SHOE CO. NASHVILLE, TENN.,

The symbol on the reverse of most of the tokens appears to be a swastika but is actually a good luck symbol.  Read more about the symbol here (a reference web site).  Most of these medals were issued with a small hole at the top.  This was done to allow the medal to be tied to the shoe before they were sold.
