Kodiak Xpedition
I am pleased to announce the 6th annual Northwest Whitewater Kodiak Xpedition. We will spend seven days on Idaho's Lower Salmon River, running from White Bird, Idaho through the confluence of the Salmon River with the Snake River in Oregon, and taking out in Southwest Washington State at Heller Bar. The trek is limited to 30 people in order to remain as a single group on the river. We will be offering Kodiak X over the first weekend, and then a full Kodiak Course during the week. We will also be teaching an informal whitewater guide school (we have several ACA Whitewater Raft Guide Instructors, but there isn't time to run the full course).
The dates of the course are Saturday, July 10 through Saturday, July 17. Ground transportation from Seattle Tacoma Airport will be provided to Idaho. The cost of the course is $375, and the entire budget is based on equal cost sharing among all participants, staff and students alike. This same trip, without the training or ground transportation, can cost as much as $1100 from a commercial guide service. This is not a commercial service and we do not take any financial benefit from these trips. We are sponsored by the North West Rafters Association, and are a Paddle America Club affiliated with the American Canoe Association.

The Venturing Rendezvous was Awesome!
What a great weekend! September 11-13, 2009, SGVC held its first Venturing activity – Venturing Rendezvous. And I expect that the Venturing Rendezvous will become an annual event.
Why was it great? Well we had good weather, lots of participation but most of all, the Venturers enjoyed themselves and made new friends. How did this happen? Five Crews came together to take part in the development of the Rendezvous. The part each Crew played was:
- Crew 7 planned the Land Navigation course
- Crew 73 set up the Mountain Biking ride
- Crew 561 taught Emergency Response
- Crew 755 provided Shooting Sports equipment
- Crew 724 provided Leadership
And Dennis Matthews did the cooking!
In addition to having several Crews take responsibility for the activities, all the Crews were mixed so that Venturers could find out what other Crews were doing and in some cases talk about joining together for activities. That is what happens when you make new friends! In all we had over 50 participants from 10 Crews. One Crew came from as far away as Bakersfield.
Another significant outcome was the selection of officers for the Council's first Venturing Officers' Association (VOA). The officers and advisors are:
- President – Alexander M., Crew 724
- 1st Vice President – Chris M., Crew 73
- 2nd Vice President – Heaven A., Crew 724
- Advisor – Dennis Matthews, Crew 724
- Associate Advisor – Patti Grill, Crew 73
With a VOA, expect more Venturing coordination to happen in SGVC this year!
