Venturing Crew 73 of Diamond Bar returned home after another great Super Activity. This year the crew went to Tanzania Africa. While there, they climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro and went on a photo safari.
The trip began with a grueling flight to Kilimanjaro Airport and the city of Moshi by way of London and Nairobi. After a well-deserved day of rest the climb up Mt. Kilimanjaro began.
The Mountain is the tallest in Africa at slightly over 19,000 ft. After four days of hiking the crew reach the Kibo Huts at 15,500 ft. On the fifth day the crew reached the crater rim at sunrise and enjoyed their accomplishment and took pictures. It was then time to return to the starting point 18 miles and over 13,000 ft. below. The trek ended on the afternoon of the sixth day. That evening the crew was joined by their guides for a victory dinner and the presentations of certificates for reaching the rim.
The next morning it was off on safari. The crew visited three national parks and literally saw thousands of animals. In the Ngorongoro Crater they came upon a group of lions that had just recently killed a zebra. When the land cruisers stopped so members could take pictures, the lions laid next to the vehicles for shade. At Lake Manyara National Park the elephants were so close one of the crewmembers called it a "Jurassic Park" moment.
On a cultural note, the crew also visited the Olduvai Gorge and a Maasai Village.
After a two-week stay in Africa, the Crew returned home with many great memories and hundreds of pictures. This Super Activity will be remembered for a lifetime.
