Our Leadership Team

The team we have assembled to staff these Kodiak Xpeditions includes over 70 years of experience in Scouting adult leadership.  Every one of us has an advanced degree in a field related to the subject matter, including two PhD's, an MBA, and an MS in Education.  We also have four ACA Raft Guide Instructors, an American Red Cross WFA Instructor and approximately 20,000 miles of combined whitewater river running experience.  Our experience with Kodiak goes back to 2001 when the first two Nature of Leadership Treks were held.

Joe Garrett

Joe and his Venturing Crew are the ones that make this program special.  Joe through his resources has acquired a large fleet of whitewater rafts and equipment to accommodate large groups on our treks.  He is now focused on setting the standard for whitewater safety in Scouting.  This will be the seventh Kodiak Trek that Joe and his Crew have organized.  They have run the Yukon River in AK, the Deschutes River in OR, the Colorado River in Utah, the Salmon River in ID, the Klamath River in California, and the Flathead River in Montana.  It will also be their seventh annual Salmon River trip.  The Crew has a number of members who have completed whitewater guide certification and four ACA certified whitewater raft guide instructors.

Craig Murray

This will be Craig's fifth time as the Kodiak course director with Joe.  He has also been a trainer for four Kodiak Course Director Courses in the Western Region.  Craig is the webmaster for www.kodiak-bsa.org and was on the National Kodiak task force.

Carol Murray

Carol is the assistant course director for the Kodiak Xpedition.  Carol's background is education and training so she adds a great deal to the quality of our courses.

John Bowen

John joined our group two years ago a Wilderness First Aid instructor.  He is also a whitewater guide instructor and has many years of experience taking Venturers on river adventures in Wyoming, Utah and Colorado.
