Kodiak-X / Staff Development

Kodiak-X builds on the five commissions of the Kodiak experience and it is imperative that each Venturer knows the Kodiak commissions.  Because this trek is a combination of Kodiak-X and staff development for Kodiak, it will ensure that the Kodiak commissions are well reviewed.  In designing this experience, the Nature of Leadership taskforce felt it was important to have a leadership challenge experience for our older teens.  It is one thing to teach leadership skills, it is another to have to practice those skills.  That is this leadership challenge course.  The Venturers will start on Sunday with each participant having the opportunity to lead his or her group through a leadership challenge.  They will learn the value of Evaluating Performance (commission #6) after each challenge by seeking input from others and then process that input.  Over the week, they will review and practice the five commissions learned in Kodiak so that they are prepared as Kodiak instructors.  Also during the week, they will learn that a good leader is always preparing someone to take their place.  This final commission will be on the concept of Mentoring (commission #7).

Kodiak

Kodiak is undergoing some changes and we will be piloting the new course this summer.  The commissions will remain the same but the structure of the course is being modified to be better integrated with the trek.  These changes align well with our objective for the trek.  Kodiak will begin after Kodiak X is completed.  The closing campfile for Kodiak will Friday evening.

Whitewater Guide Training

This informal course includes instruction techniques to enable the experienced guide to teach new whitewater guides.  It is a 5 day course taught by ACA Certified instructors.
